Johan Zagers (born August 6, 1960 in Brecht , Belgium ) is a Belgian dressage rider and international trainer.

life and career

As the son of an entrepreneur, Johan Zagers began riding as a child. After studying philosophy and religious studies and two years as a teacher, he decided, after a serious car accident, to enter the equestrian sport professionally . Despite the medical predictions that riding would no longer be possible for the then 23-year-old, he got into the saddle for the first time in a year and a half. In 1985 he finally began his training with the internationally successful dressage rider Jan Nivelle at the Mülheim Eschenbruch stud owned by the Tummes family, and in 1990 he took the professional rider's test and obtained his riding title with a Stensbeck award . In 1994 he moved to Düsseldorf.

During his career, Zagers was supported by Arthur Kottas-Heldenberg, a former chief rider of the Spanish Riding School, the Grand Prix judges Hans-Peter Schmitz and Volker Moritz and other well-known riders. He is the holder of the golden riding badge.

Johan Zagers is married and has a son and a daughter. He lives with his wife Katja in Mettmann near Düsseldorf . He has been running his training stable at the Henscheshof in Erkrath since 2014 .

Sports career

Johan Zagers can look back on national and international Grand Prix victories. For his home country Belgium he took part in two European championships (Hickstead 2003 and Rotterdam 2011 ). At the Belgian Championships in 2002 he won the runner-up title, in 2003 he became Belgian champion and in 2011 he won the bronze medal. In the same year Zagers represented his country with the Belgian team at the CHIO in Aachen.

Coaching career

Johan Zagers has been a national and international trainer for several years.

From 2004 to 2010 he trained the Brazilian dressage team. After four years of recurring intensive training stays in Brazil and at Zagers in Germany , he accompanied his young team to the Olympic Games in Hong Kong . It was the first time that a Brazilian team took part in the Olympics. This consisted of the three riders Luiza Almeida, Leandro da Silva and Rogerio Clementino. At the age of 17, Almeida was also the youngest dressage Olympian of all time.

Zagers was also a base trainer for dressage in the Rhineland from 2009 to 2013 and has been a member of the training discipline committee of the Rhineland Equestrian Sports Association since January 2010 .

Johan Zagers has been running the Yeguada Centurion sports stable north of Madrid, the stud farm of Spanish entrepreneur Leopoldo Fernandez Pujals, since the beginning of 2013.
