Johan beym Graben (born August 7, 1561 in Lüdingworth near Cuxhaven , † May 10, 1623 in Stade ) was a German mayor in Lüdingworth and later Gräfe (chief judge) in the country of Hadeln .

biography

Johan beym Graben was the son of a farmer. The local pastor taught him. He then graduated from the Johanneum Lüneburg and studied law at the University of Wittenberg . In 1585 he took over his parents' farm. In 1597 he was appointed mayor of Lüdingworth by Duke Francis II and he was also the spokesman for the Hadler estates.

In 1615 he asked the duke for his dismissal because of defamation, who then appointed him court counselor and chancellery and in 1617 count (chief judge) of the Land of Hadeln and deputy of the Lauenburg court in Hadeln. Renewed intrigues and defamation led to his requesting his release around 1619, which was granted upon receipt of his title. But he remained an advisor to the duke. In 1619 he was appointed state consultant. He influenced the expansion and design of St. Jacobi Church (Lüdingworth) .

In a dispute between the church visitors and the Hadler estates about the right to appoint and dismiss pastors, the parish voted for the sole right to appoint pastors. Therefore it came to a break with the Lauenburger Hof and Duke August von Sachsen-Lauenburg . In March 1623, for reasons of security, he moved to Stade, which belonged to the Archbishopric and Duchy of Bremen . A request for extradition by the Duke was not granted by the Stade magistrate. The Duke confiscated his property in Lüdingworth. After his death (1623) he was rehabilitated and his property went to his heirs. The son Christoffer (1587–1647) took over the farm around 1617. A number of the Lüdingworth family members were farmers around this time.
