Johann Baal
Johann Baal (also Pater Marianus Baal OSB) (born December 18, 1657 in Karlstadt ; † May 19, 1701 in Münsterschwarzach ) was a German Baroque composer .
Live and act
Johann Baal, son of a long-established saddlery family, was first mentioned when he was about twenty years old when he got a job as organist and composer at the court of Peter Philipp von Dernbach . In 1685 he gave up this post to join the Münsterschwarzach monastery as Father Marianus . Little has been preserved of Baal's compositional work; only four motets were published in print. His most important surviving work is a "Mass in A", which was handwritten copied by Johann Sebastian Bach (Kyrie) and Johann Gottfried Walther (Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei). In addition, some motets based on sacred poetry for solo voice and figured bass as well as a violin sonata in A minor have been preserved.
