Johann Bacher (sociologist)

Johann Bacher (born October 3, 1959 in Wels , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian scientist. He is Professor of Sociology at the University of Linz (JKU). He is head of the institute for sociology and head of department for empirical sociology as well as head of department for criminology at the Center for Forensic Psychology and Criminology at the JKU.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1978, Johann Bacher studied social and economic statistics (1st section) and sociology (1st and 2nd section) in Linz. In 1986 he received his doctorate in sociology. After three years as a temporary academic advisor at the Chair of Sociology and Social Anthropology of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg , he worked as a university assistant at the Institute of Sociology at the JKU.

After his habilitation in sociology at the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences at the JKU in 1994. From 1996 to 2004 he was C4 professor for sociology and holder of the chair for sociology at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg . Since 2004 he has been a university professor for sociology and empirical social research at the JKU (head of the Institute for Sociology, head of the department for empirical social research). He has also been head of the criminology department of the Center for Forensic Psychology and Criminology at the JKU since 2006.

He is considered an expert in the methods of empirical social research. For the application of cluster analysis in sociology, he has written a standard work that is already in its third edition.
