from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Baptist Ritter von Zahlhaas , called Neufeld , ( September 28, 1787 in Vienna - December 30, 1870 ibid) was an Austrian theater actor , singer ( bass ), poet , translator , librettist , theater director and director .

Life

Zahlhaas, brother of the actor Carl von Zahlhaas , went to the theater at an early age under the name "Neufeld" and became a member of the Hofburgtheater . In August 1817 he came to Leipzig, where he played all kinds of character and father roles until 1821. He was also active there as a theater poet, librettist, translator and singer of small bass parts.

He couldn't take it anywhere for long. So he worked in Mannheim in 1821 and 1822, made guest appearances (presumably) in the winter of 1821/22 with Wilhelm Gerstel in Dessau, became co-director of the Bremen theater alongside Franz Mejo in 1822 and although he was widely acclaimed, he left this sphere of activity and became after guest appearances in February / March 1825 Court actor in Dresden until 1829, from there he made guest appearances in May 1826 at an old place of work in Bremen.

In April 1829 he had guest appearances in Leipzig and from July 1829 at the Hoftheater Darmstadt . In 1830 he wanted to leave Germany and move to Paris, but was hired in Brussels and Düsseldorf. In September / October 1832 he gave a guest performance at the Hofburgtheater and was director at the Nuremberg Theater from 1833 to 1834.

After that he lived u. a. in Leipzig (1834–1836), Berlin and Oldenburg, before he became director from January 1, 1842, and from April 1, 1842 to 1844 director of the Sondershausen Court Theater. In Sondershausen he also plays hero fathers and character roles.

He then lived in Lucka near Altenburg, before finally living in Vienna, where he also died.

Zahlhaas made himself known less as a performing artist than as a theater poet, his tragedies and historical plays were popular. His dramatic works were mainly characterized by sharp character drawing, lively dialogue and thorough knowledge of the theatrical effect.

Zahlhaas made a special contribution to the German stage with the translation and adaptation of Shakespeare's King Lear and Calderon's Das Leben ist ein Traum .

He was probably married twice, once to a woman whose name was unknown. From this marriage his daughter Johanna emerged, who became known as an actress under the name Johanna Gabillon . The reason for the end of the marriage (death, divorce) is not known. On August 6, 1823, he married Henriette Charlotte Erhard in Bremen. His second (?) Daughter Rieke was a foster child with Caroline von Weber in Hosterwitz during his time in Dresden .
