Johann Bartsch (botanist)
Johann Bartsch (* 1709 in Königsberg , † 1738 in Suriname ) was a German doctor and botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Bartsch ".
Life
Johann Bartsch studied medicine at the University of Leiden . There he met Carl von Linné and supported him in editing his work Flora Lapponica . When Hermann Boerhaave offered Linnaeus the post of doctor to the WIC, the Dutch West India Company in Dutch Guiana , in the summer of 1737 , Linnaeus turned it down and recommended Boerhaave to Johann Bartsch instead.
Bartsch died in 1738 six months after his arrival in Dutch Guiana, today's Suriname.
Honor taxon
Carl von Linné named the genus Bartsia of the fig family of plants (Scrophulariaceae) in his honor .
