Johann Benedict Hoffmann (the Elder) (historically Johann Benedict Hoffmann * 1667 / 68 in Sorau , Niederlausitz ; † 10. March 1745 in Gdansk , Polish Prussia ) was a painter in Gdansk.

Life

The father Zacharias Hoffmann was a wheelwright in Sorau, the mother was Maria Greff. Johann Benedikt Hoffmann became a member of the painters' guild in Danzig in 1694. In the following year he made his masterpiece under Andreas Stech , in 1696 he received the citizenship of the city. Between 1716 and 1742 he was often chairman of the painters' guild. His students included Jacob Wessel , Daniel Klein and his son Johann Benedikt Hoffmann the Younger .

Hoffmann died in 1745 at the age of 77.

Johann Benedikt Hoffmann was a respected painter in Danzig in his time. He created ceiling and wall paintings in the French style in the Artus Court , the Dominican monastery and in the homes of wealthy citizens. Probably nothing of these has survived. He also painted portraits of contemporary and historical Danzig personalities.
