Jacob Wessel
Jacob Wessel (baptized July 20, 1710 in Danzig , Polish Prussia ; died September 25, 1780 ) was a painter in Danzig.
life and work
Jacob Wessel learned from Johann Benedikt Hoffmann the Elder in Danzig. In 1736 he made a master's degree with Antoine Pesne in Berlin .
By 1740 at the latest, Wessel was back in Danzig, where he became a member of the painters' guild. The following year he was granted citizenship of the city.
Jacob Wessel portrayed the important personalities of Danzig of his time, including mayors, councilors and pastors. About 80 portraits are known, of which about 20 have been preserved in Gdansk, Warsaw, Berlin, Stuttgart, Warendorf and other places. He also created historical paintings and wrote lexicon articles about fellow painters.
Jacob Wessel is considered the most important Gdańsk painter of the 18th century, which is mainly due to the fact that there were no comparable artists in the city at this time.
