Georg Christoph Grooth

Georg Christoph Grooth ( Russian Георг Кристоф Гроот * 21st January 1716 in Stuttgart , † September 28 . Jul / 9. October  1749 greg. In St. Petersburg ) was a German painter and portraitist .

Life

Georg Grooth was the son of Johann Christoph Grooth (1688–1764), court painter to the Duke of Württemberg and curator of the ducal picture gallery . Georg Grooth was known as the "Little Grooth" with regard to his younger older brother Johann Friedrich Grooth ( Russian Иоганн Фридрих Гроо́т ).

Georg Grooth learned painting from his father and other masters in Ludwigsburg and Dresden . He lived and worked in Prague from 1739 to 1740. In 1741 he emigrated to Reval with his brother at the invitation of General Ulrich von Löwendal, who was in Russian service . In 1742 he was involved in the design of the triumphal arches in Moscow for the coronation of Tsarina Elizabeth . In 1743 he settled in St. Petersburg and became court painter to Tsarina Elisabeth and curator and restorer of the imperial painting collections together with Lucas Conrad Pfandzelt . He decorated the imperial palaces, portrayed the members of the imperial court and painted the icons for the house chapel in the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo . Ivan Argunov was one of his students .
