Johann Friedrich Grooth ( Russian Иоганн Фридрих Гроот * 23. April 1717 in Stuttgart , † February 6 . Jul / 18th February  1801 greg. In St. Petersburg ) was a German painter and animal painter .

Life

Johann Friedrich Grooth was the son of Johann Christoph Grooth (1688–1764), court painter to the Duke of Württemberg and curator of the ducal picture gallery . Johann Friedrich Grooth was known as the "Great Grooth" in reference to his older, younger brother Georg Christoph Grooth . Johann Friedrich learned painting from his father and other masters in Ludwigsburg and Dresden . 1739–1740 he lived and worked in Vienna .

In 1741 Johann Friedrich Grooth emigrated to Reval with his brother at the invitation of General Ulrich von Löwendal, who was in Russian service . In 1742 he became a restorer of the imperial painting collections in St. Petersburg . In 1749, after the death of his brother, Grooth was appointed court painter (until 1761).

Tsarina Elisabeth loved hunting and depicting hunting scenes and wild animals and domestic animals. Grooth painted such pictures and created a large number of paintings of this kind on her behalf. Each new work was viewed by the entire court. These pictures were hanging in the Mon Bijou hunting lodge in Tsarskoye Selo . In 1765 41 pictures were transferred to the newly founded St. Petersburg Art Academy , where they formed the "Grooth Gallery". At the end of the 19th century there was only one picture left (wild fowl) . Many other pictures by Grooth are in the Gatchina Palace .

In 1765 Grooth was admitted to the art academy as an academy and given the painting class. In 1766 he became a consultant and in 1774 an honorary member of the academy. He was the leading teacher of animal painting and had many students, including Mikhail Ivanov . In 1775, Grooth's student Karl Friedrich Knappe took over the painting class.
