Karl Friedrich Knappe

Karl Friedrich Knappe ( Russian Карл Фри́дрих Кна́ппе ; * 1745 ; † 1808 ) was a German painter and draftsman of animals and plants.

Life

Knappe was of German descent and a student of Johann Friedrich Grooth at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art . Knappe then worked in St. Petersburg for the imperial court. He mainly created watercolors and gouaches , but also genre paintings and engravings . Some of his works are well preserved in private collections and in Pavlovsk Castle . The drawings Flora Rossica , published by the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences , come from him . In 1774 Knappe became a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Art and taught animal and bird painting. In 1775 he took over the painting class from his teacher Grooth. In 1785 he became an academy councilor. He also taught at the German Petri School . In 1795 he was sent into retirement because of the termination of his painting class.

Knappes daughter Jekaterina was the mother of the architect Joseph Bové .
