Renate Sattler b. Müller (born October 8, 1961 in Magdeburg ) is a German writer .

Life and career

Renate Sattler grew up as the daughter of an architect and a secretary in the GDR district town of Magdeburg. After attending the polytechnic high school , she began an apprenticeship as a skilled worker for writing technology and then worked as a secretary in the GDR cultural association. During her school days she was delegated to the district poetry seminar and from 1978 to 1984 she attended the “Writing Students” group under the direction of Wolf D. Brennecke at the Magdeburg Technical University . She was delegated several times to the Central Poetry Seminar in Schwerin .

From 1984 to 1987 Renate Sattler studied cultural studies at the college for club leaders " Martin Andersen Nexö " in Meißen . During her studies she led a literary circle. After successfully completing her studies, she worked as a cultural-political employee in the district cabinet for cultural work and until completion in the Academy for Education and Cultural Promotion. In 1987, together with Jörg Mantzsch , Sattler founded a reading stage in Magdeburg, where young writers and songwriters performed.

She volunteered in the “support group for indigenous people” in Berlin-Treptow , and in 1987 she established contacts with Native American organizations in the USA. She was chairman of the “Mitwelt” foundation , later the Heinrich Böll Foundation , and co-founder of the West Papua network . In 1993 she founded the “Fourth World Working Group” and was its coordinator for development education.

Renate Sattler has been a freelance writer since 2007 and has been chairwoman of the Saxony-Anhalt regional association of the Association of German Writers since 2011. She has also been a member of the PEN Center Germany since 2019 .

Renate Sattler writes novels, short stories, children's books and poetry. She is married and has a son.
