Johann Caspar Bernegger (* 18th March 1612 in Strasbourg ; † 28. May 1675 ) was a German lawyer , archivist , secretary , diplomat and reigning in the year of his death Ammeister ( mayor ) of Strasbourg.

Life

Johann Caspar Bernegger was the son of the philologist and university professor Matthias Bernegger from Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut , who emigrated to Strasbourg because of his Protestant faith. He studied secular law in his hometown. After completing his studies, he entered the service of his hometown and worked as an archivist from 1638 and as a lay judge from 1640 . On January 22, 1651 he was appointed Secretary of the Council. On November 7, 1665 he was elected to the Council of XV and on September 24, 1670 to the Council of XIII.

Bernegger represented the city of Strasbourg at the Congress of the Peace of Westphalia . As a diplomat he repeatedly represented the city of Strasbourg vis-à-vis France and tried to preserve the city's independence. On January 7, 1675 he was elected 141st Ammeister of the city of Strasbourg. He died while exercising office on May 28, 1675. He did not live to see the fall of the Republic of Strasbourg through the French occupation in 1681.

Johann Caspar Bernegger edited his father's works and scientific correspondence. His first marriage from 1638 to Magdalena Beinheim (1611–1661), the widow of Friedrich von Türckheim, and his second marriage to Appoline Sebitz, the widow of the law professor Johann Sebastian Gambs, married.
