Matthias Bernegger (born February 8, 1582 in Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut ; † February 5, 1640 in Strasbourg ) was a German philologist , university professor and Latin author.

Life

Bernegger came from a family expelled by the Counter-Reformation who, like so many of the so-called “ exiles ”, first settled in Regensburg , where he attended grammar school until he enrolled in Strasbourg in 1599 at the age of seventeen . Scientific curiosity drove him to study in many fields, especially in philology and the natural sciences . The Astronomy particularly fascinated him. He translated several works by Galileo Galilei and corresponded for years with Johannes Kepler and Wilhelm Schickard . He had a deep friendship in particular with Kepler, whom he had met in Linz in 1612. In 1620 Kepler gave him an oil painting with his portrait, after which he had an engraving made in Kepler's honor and which he passed on to the Strasbourg library in 1627. In 1630 he arranged the wedding of Kepler's daughter Susanna with Jacob Bartsch in Strasbourg because Kepler was unable to attend.

Politically interested, he turned personally as a pacifist against Caspar Schoppe 's incitement to war and at the same time tried to act as a mediator towards France. From 1607, like his colleague Caspar Brülow, he first taught for a time at the Protestant grammar school until he was appointed to the Strasbourg Academy in 1613 (university from 1621), and from 1626 also as professor of rhetoric. He was well known for his editions of the classics, especially Tacitus , and his extensive correspondence. Daniel von Czepko , Johannes Freinsheim , Johann Michael Moscherosch , Martin Opitz and Robert Roberthin belonged to the large circle of his students . Bernegger appeared as a printer of his own writings after he had acquired the printing press from the estate of Nikolaus Wyriot the Younger in 1629. He employed Johann Georg Simon as a printer, who continued the workshop after Bernegger's death.
