Johann Caspar Rumpe

Johann Caspar Rumpe (born June 25, 1748 in Altena ; † July 27, 1833 there ) was a Reidemeister , wire and sewing needle manufacturer and mayor of Altena during the French period.

Live and act

Starting from Altena, Rumpe built up an important early industrial trade and factory system. In 1788 Friedrich Wilhelm II. Visited the not yet completely finished sewing needle factory to find out about the wire and needle industry in Altena. The factory, which was originally powered by water power, was built with financial support from the Prussian state. The sewing needle production was based on English models. It employed several hundred people. It is considered to be one of the “original factories” of metal production. Rumpe also operated a thimble mill and an English plate hammer. In addition, Rumpe worked as a wire installer and as a businessman on a large scale. Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom Stein characterized Rumpe as "an extraordinarily active factory entrepreneur with commercial interests, often cunning and clever."

However, at times his undertakings suffered considerably from Napoleon's economic policy. He therefore took part in a petition from entrepreneurs from Rhineland and Westphalia in 1811. Cut off from the previous markets, they now demanded the opening of the French market. Later he also turned to iron and steel production.

In addition to production facilities around Altena, this included various mines such as the Caspari colliery near Arnsberg and the Silberhardt mine in Windeck . Rumpe also planned the establishment of a bank for the Grafschaft Mark , based in Hagen .

As a successful entrepreneur, Rumpe had the abbey builder Engelbert Kleinhanz from Essen-Werden build a representative residential and commercial building with an early classical facade in 1797/98 . The building served as a post office from 1883 and was demolished in 1911.

Rumpe left a self-portrait about his life, which is a source for the early history of industrialization.
