Johann Christian Claudius Devaranne (born March 8, 1784 in Hanau ; † July 20, 1813 in Düsseldorf ) was a leader in the local resistance in Solingen against Napoleonic troop levies after his great losses in the Russian campaign .

family

Johann Devaranne came from a Huguenot family that was based in Hanau. His father Peter Devaranne (April 2, 1761 - November 18, 1824) was a locksmith and married his mother, Elisabeth Jost (April 1759 - January 2, 1813) on March 10, 1783. Johann Devaranne was probably the oldest of four siblings: Marianne Karoline Devaranne (born June 14, 1788), Christian Heinrich Devaranne (1790 - October 25, 1813) and Johanna Elisabeth Devaranne (April 6, 1794 - June 16, 1869). The family was a member of the Walloon-Dutch community in Hanau.

Johann Devaranne married Katharina Margaretha Friederika Hager on March 9, 1805. The marriage had five children: Auguste Emilie (born February 2, 1806), Eduard Julius, Wilhemine Theadora (born August 25, 1807), Albertine Juliane (February 23, 1810) and Henrietta Augusta (October 6, 1811 - 29. July 1817).

It is not known when Johann Devaranne moved to Solingen. The oldest evidence that he ran a hardware store there dates from December 1, 1806. He also ran an inn.

Political activities

When new troops were raised in Germany after the defeat of Napoleon I in the Russian campaign , resistance arose among the population. Johann Devaranne was identified by the Napoleonic police as one of the ringleaders in the Solingen area, was initially able to flee and was put out to be searched . A bounty of 100 francs was offered for his capture. His housekeeper betrayed him and he was arrested . After a court case together with other insurgents, he was shot dead in Düsseldorf .

Aftermath

Street in Solingen-Wald - named after Johann Devaranne

In the transfiguration, appropriation and instrumentalization of the anti-Napoleonic resistance, a plaque was unveiled on the 120th anniversary of his shooting on July 23, 1933. In the local reporting on the event, he was compared with role models of the National Socialists , such as Albert Leo Schlageter , Horst Wessel and Ferdinand von Schill . After the Second World War , the memorial plaque was dismantled.

Today a street name in Solingen-Wald reminds of him.
