Johann Christian Koch
Johann Christian Koch (born October 23, 1680 in Aken (Elbe) ; † November 1, 1742 in Gotha ) was a famous medalist and coin engraver at the Gotha Mint .
Life
Johann Christian Koch was born on October 23, 1680; according to the old calendar , it was October 12th. His parents were the court and armorer Nikolaus Koch from Schleiz and his wife Anna Catharina, b. Luckow .
Around 1697 the famous medalist Christian Wermuth took him to Gotha for training and sent him to the local stamp cutting school. At the same time, Johann Christian Koch also worked in the Wermuth workshop. Medals that left Wermuth's workshop between 1700 and 1707 and were considered one of the most beautiful were partially attributed to him. He soon found the longed-for job at the court in Gotha . For thirty years he worked in the service of the two dukes ( Friedrich II. And Friedrich III. Of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg ). Furthermore, he also took on work for princely courts that were family or friendly with the houses of the two dukes. Johann Christian Koch died on November 1, 1741 at the age of 62 in Gotha, after lying in a sick bed for six weeks.

The oeuvre that has come down to us and that is clearly attributed to him includes around 150 medals and coins. Contemporaries appreciated the great resemblance of the portraits and the plastic design of the medals in his works. Johann Christian Koch was also able to present his portraits in a baroque manner. He showed a particular skill in the choice and design of the inscriptions with hymns of praise, electoral and mottos and the chronograms popular in the 18th century.
