Life

Johann Christoph Herrlein received his training in the workshop of his father Johann Andreas Herrlein in Fulda. According to the custom at the time, he should have completed his apprenticeship around 17 years of age, i.e. around 1777. He then initially worked as a painter in Fulda. After his marriage in 1782 to Anna Barbara Dauber, a daughter of the hunter Heinrich Dauer in Sandberg near Schwarzbach (Rhön) , little gentleman became a hunter in Schwarzbach (Rhön). In the church register there, he is mentioned in the marriage entry as a hunter and painter , so he seems to have practiced both professions at the same time. After his marriage failed, he went to Vienna to see his brother Johann Leonhard Herrlein, who lived there .

Its sequence of six hunting scenes, created around 1790, is of particular cultural and historical importance and allows interesting conclusions to be drawn about the type of Fulda hunt in the late 18th century.
