Johann Leonhard Herrlein

Johann Leonhard Herrlein (born November 15, 1752 in Fulda , † October 25, 1814 in Vienna ) was a German painter and restorer . He came from the Herrlein family of painters .

Life

Johann Leonhard Herrlein received his training in the workshop of his father Johann Andreas Herrlein in Fulda . In 1779 he went to Vienna and took over the management of the painting collection of Prince Nicholas II. Esterházy , which today is the most important part of the collections of the Szépművészeti Múzeum (Museum of Fine Arts) in Budapest . Herrlein was responsible for building up one of the most important European art collections of its time. At the same time he worked as a painter, as he had previously in Fulda.

In 1779 in Vienna he also painted an al fresco staircase in a house on Sternwartegasse with depictions of agriculture. In 1786/1787 he restored the paintings in the Schottenkirche in Vienna.
