Johann Christoph Sticht
Johann Christoph Sticht (* around 1705 in Selb ; † January 12, 1772 in Altona ) was a German educator , orientalist and Protestant theologian .
Life
Johann Christoph Sticht, the son of a shoemaker, had attended the school in his place of birth and continued his education at the Lyceum in Wunsiedel and at the Gymnasium in Gera . Sticht began his academic career at the University of Jena , where, in addition to theology, he also studied oriental languages. In 1727, under the chairmanship of Johann Leonhard Reckenberger (1702–1773), who had aroused his fondness for oriental literature, Sticht defended his treatise de urbe Hanochia ad genuinum Capitis 4, 17. Geneseos sensum investigandum .
When he returned to his homeland, he became a teacher and, on the recommendation of Johann Adam Flessa (1694–1775), was appointed professor of oriental languages in 1741 at the Christianeum , the high school in Altona . He took up this position with a Latin speech about the disadvantages which the neglect of language studies in the Middle Ages had for the sciences. He resigned the sub-lecturer at the pedagogy in Altona when he had received a professorship in theology at the grammar school there. When this position was abolished in 1771, he received a pension, but died the following year.
Sticht used his knowledge of the oriental language in particular for exegesis and criticism of the Old and New Testaments . His Latin dissertations and programs were not without controversy.
