Johann Conrad Gerhard

Johann Conrad Gerhard ( Russian Иван Кондратьевич Герард Ivan Kondratjewitsch Gerard * 13. May 1720 in Swabia , † June 8 ^{. Jul} / 20th June 1808 ^greg. ) Was a Swabian - Russian hydraulic engineer .

Life

After training and working in Germany , Gerhard studied at the Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg . In 1765 he entered the Russian service under the director of the waterways Count Jacob Johann Sievers .

As part of Jan Pieter van Suchtelens' model project for bridge construction in St. Petersburg, Gerhard and Suchtelen built the Staro-Kalinkin Bridge over the Fontanka from 1786 to 1788 . In 1790 Gerhard was a real state councilor (fourth rank ) and architect for the imperial hydraulic structures. He carried out many important projects for the Vyshny Volochok waterway system and the Ladoga Canal . In 1798 he became an employee of the new water transport department. He supervised the construction of the Weljo Canal, which was supposed to connect Lake Weljo on the Valdai Heights with the Libya River of the Vyshny Volochok waterway system. He developed the project for the construction of Mytishchi - Moscow - water line and oversaw its implementation. He became a Privy Councilor (3rd class).

Gerhard was married. He had four sons and a daughter. Anton Ivanovich († 1830) was an engineer major general . Fyodor (Ferdinand) Ivanovich (1761–1829) was an engineer lieutenant general and member of the water transport department. Loggin Ivanovich († 1807) was major general. Charlotta Ivanovna married General Johann Hermann von Fersen (1740–1801).
