Johann Daniel of Braunschweig

Johann Daniel von Braunschweig (born August 26, 1786 in Mitau , † December 24, 1857 in Wolmar ) was a German-Baltic pedagogue and writer.

Life

From 1803 Johann Daniel von Braunschweig attended the grammar school in Mitau and from 1805 the University of Dorpat , where he received the prize medal of the theological faculty in December of the same year. In 1806 he went to Göttingen to continue his studies . In 1808/09 he made a trip to Dresden, Silesia and Paris. After his return to Courland (1809) he took several positions as a tutor. In 1815 he became a senior teacher at the high school in Riga , in 1816 director of the Kurland governorate, and in 1817 a senior teacher at the illustrious high school in Mitau. From 1819 he was also deputy governor school director, from 1826 college assessor. In 1830 he became a councilor and later a councilor. In 1837 he resigned as deputy governor's school director. Two years later he lost his job as a senior teacher and temporarily moved to Riga, but then returned to Mitau and finally settled in Wolmar ( Livonia ).

reviews

Braunschweig's “general history of the peoples” was judged to be “hardworking and original”, but also “ineffective” and “of a forced artificiality”. The work is ingenious, but not happy.
