Johann David Pfeffer (born January 11, 1769 in Stetten im Remstal ; † February 28, 1842 ibid) was a minstrel in Stetten im Remstal.

Life

Johann David Pfeffer was born as the last of 14 children on January 11, 1769 in Stetten. He became known as the "pepper of Stetten". The father was a carpenter. He learned to play the violin from an uncle.

Pepper made his living by playing and singing frivolous songs on the public streets, at festivals, markets and in restaurants. He was known for his wit, his quick-wittedness and his lack of respect for the authorities. Through its recurring pranks, the Stetten pepper has gained a mischievous reputation.

He paid his taxes and took his civil duties very seriously. He was also good at dealing with money and trading real estate for profit. Hence, although the pepper came from a poor family, it was wealthy.

On November 11, 1796, he married Dorothea Magdalena Schweizer, who was thirteen years his senior. The couple remained childless.

At the age of 73 he died of emaciation caused by tuberculosis on February 28, 1842 in Stetten. His wife died on May 12, 1849 as the village elder in Stetten.

Notoriety

Many stories about generations are told from person to person about the pepper from Stetten.

These stories were picked up by the Swabian dialect poet August Lämmle , who learned a lot about pepper in Stetten around the turn of the century. Whereby he himself said that many stories about the pepper are not true and that this often only serves as a symbol.

Even Georg Schwarz has served these stories in his novel "Pepper von Stetten".

In 1989, the Swabian Theater Stuttgarter Komödle and its Volkstheater ensemble performed a play about the pepper from Stetten.

Others

In the Kerner district of Stetten, David-Pfeffer-Strasse now exists not far from his house where he was born and where he lived at Mühlstrasse 2, where the roof structure of the building burned out on March 3, 2015.

The “Zum Pfeffer” inn is located on Pommerstrasse and has wall paintings about the life of the pepper that are over a hundred years old. The building has not been used as an inn for several years.

There is a regular guided tour that deals with him and the history of Stetten.
