Johann Elias Rothmaler

Johann Elias Rothmaler (born March 2, 1634 in Frankenhausen ; † August 26, 1694 in Herrmannsacker ) was a German Lutheran clergyman and alchemist.

Life

Rothmaler was the son of the deacon Johann Rothmaler and his second wife Annemarie Scheffel. He received his first training at the school in Rudolstadt. In 1648 he was enrolled at the University of Jena. There he disputed in the subject of logic de genere in 1655 and received his master's degree on February 16, 1657 .

From 1659 to 1661 he was pastor in Berga , from 1661 to 1685 court preacher and deacon in Rudolstadt .

In 1685 he was released. After Rothmaler had already been ordered by Elector Johann Georg III in 1682 . was invited to Saxony because of his alchemical knowledge, he now accepted this call and was appointed chief inspector of the secret metalwork in Freiberg , where he can be proven until at least 1692. After the death of George he left this position again and lived in Herrmannsacker in the service of Count Christoph Ludwig I. zu Stolberg-Stolberg . In addition, Rothmaler is said to have been an inspector in the city of Walterhausen in the Duchy of Gotha.

Rothmaler married twice: in 1659 with Clara Maria Maior (1637–1673), a daughter of the theologian Johann Andreas Major, and in 1673 with Catharina Elisabeth Scheller (1645–1698). Of the total of 13 children, only three reached the age to have offspring themselves.
