biography

Johann Franz Suppan was a landowner, banker, factory owner and early on took over the business of his wealthy father, who had left a foundation for the benefit of impoverished members of the trade. He ran his banking and exchange business at Alter Platz No. 28, and house No. 31 ("Haus zur Goldenen Gans", the oldest house in the city) also belonged to him, as well as the castles of Mageregg and Ehrenhausen.

In 1900 he became a local councilor , in 1905 a member of the state parliament and in the same year he was elected mayor of Klagenfurt. The “Auto Club Klagenfurt” was founded during his only one year term of office and in October the first “Reliability Drive for Motorcycles” took place. The Edlmannhaus (today the bank for Carinthia), the Spitrahof and the Maria Hilf sanatorium are built. With the covering of the Feuerbach in the city area, an epidemic was eliminated. The school medical service is introduced in the municipal schools and the Christian-social “ Kärntner Tagblatt ” appears for the first time.

Due to illness, Suppan had to resign after one year in office and died after a long, serious illness on May 30, 1910 and was buried in the central cemetery Annabichl in field 2, chapel crypt south-east. He was married to Marie Maudry (1861-1927).
