Suve Jaan (actually Johann Friedrich Sommer; born December 12 . Jul / 23. December  1777 greg. In Tallinn , † January 6 jul. / 18th January  1851 greg. In Pärnu ) was an Estonian writer.

life and work

Johann Friedrich Sommer attended German and Russian-speaking schools. He then signed on to the Russian warship Saratov . At the Saksi farm , he first learned the office of estate manager. From 1808 to 1837 he worked as a Russian teacher in Rakvere , Viljandi and Pärnu .

Only when he was retired did he become a writer under the Estonian translation of his name, Suve Jaan. In 1839/40 he first sent poems and stories in Estonian to the Estonian Scholarly Society ( Õpetatud Eesti Selts ).

Suve Jaan had a good knowledge of Russian literature and its subjects , which can be seen in his two historical stories: Wenne Südda ja Wenne Hing. Suwwe Jaani mällestamissed surest Wenne ja Prantsuse sõast (1841) deals with the fight against Napoleon in the Patriotic War . The novella Luige Laus. Suwwe Jaani sõbradele (posthumously, 1852) is about a Russian-Swedish sea battle in the Tallinn Bay in May 1790. In it, the Estonian soldier Luige Laus is stylized as the first hero of Estonian literature , who is of course loyal to Russia and the Tsar. However, it is not the origin of the individual that counts, but his actions and his heart.

Suve Jaan was involved in the poetry collection Lillekessed , which offered a representative cross-section of the poems and songs of the time in Estonian.
