Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Wegener
Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Wegener (born April 20, 1812 in Dresden , † July 11, 1879 in Gruna near Dresden) was a German animal and landscape painter of the Romantic period .
Life
Coming from a poor background, Wegener first learned the printing trade. He was a student at the Copenhagen Art Academy for a short time , but had to break off his studies due to lack of money and earned his living as a lithographer , mainly in northern Germany ( Kiel and Hamburg ). An inheritance made it possible for him to return to Dresden and to resume his studies at the local art academy . There he was a student of Johan Christian Clausen Dahl and Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein . From 1840 onwards, his economic situation improved after the Saxon Art Association bought a painting by Wegener. In 1860 he was appointed Saxon court painter .
