Johann Friedrich von Schönberg (pseudonym: Conradus Agyrta von Bellemont ; also: Hans Friedrich von Schönberg, Friedrich von Schönberg ; * February 28, 1543 in Sitzenroda ; † March 24, 1614 in Falkenberg / Elster ) was a writer of the 16th century and author of the well-known Schildbürgerbuch.

Life

He was born in 1543 in today's Schildau district of Sitzenroda as the son of the electoral court marshal Heinrich von Schönberg († August 9, 1575 in Dresden) and his wife Dorothea, born von Hopfgarten from the Schlotheim family, and knew the neighboring town from childhood. From May 17, 1553 to March 5, 1558, Schönberg attended the St. Augustin High School in Grimma together with his brother Heinrich († 1611) . With his brother Heinrich and his half-brother August he moved into the University of Wittenberg on April 12, 1562 . Here he completed a degree in philosophical and legal sciences for seven years. Following the customs of the time, he went on an educational trip that took him to several universities. He returned in 1570 as Brandenburg councilor at the court in Berlin . After the death of his father († August 9, 1575) he took over the lower court of the divided manor in Falkenberg. In 1577 he received the post of court assistant at the Saxon court in Wittenberg and was court judge on March 19, 1590 at the same. In 1586 Johann Friedrich von Schönberg received the manor Uebigau from the Saxon elector as a fief. In 1591 he became captain of the city of Wittenberg and the offices of Wittenberg Beltzig, Gommern and Elbenau. Thereupon he moved his residence to Wittenberg in 1592, from where he retired to Falkenberg in 1613 because of the persistent plague there, where he lived until the end of his life. His body was transferred to Wittenberg and buried on April 18, 1614 in the Wittenberg Castle Church.

Schönberg gained fame as the author of the Schildbürgergeschichten . On the occasion of the general visitation in 1592 to combat Calvinism, he was particularly angry about the "dissolute customs and conditions in Schilda". This led him to ascribe the stories already printed in the Lale book of 1597 to the citizens of Schilda in order to expose them to the general laughter. The Lalebuch was not granted a great success, on the other hand the Schiltbürgerbuch , published for the first time in 1598, was livelier and saw many more reprints.

In addition, Schönberg had published the stories by Till Eulenspiegel , " Claus Narr " (1572) and the "Historia von D. Johann Faust " (1587) and thus made them accessible to a broad mass. These bourgeois writings, which were little noticed at the time, are still very popular today.

A plaque commemorates him in Uebigau since 1998. In his place of birth there is a plaque on the "Johann Friedrich von Schönberg-Linde" named after him, as well as a memorial plaque on the house at Schlossstrasse 14/15 in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. In Falkenberg / Elster there is a "Von-Schönberg-Gasse" named after him and a memorial plaque.

Genealogically it should be noted that on September 24, 1570 in Torgau he married Sibylla von Spät († 1610), the widow of a certain von Karlewitz, daughter of the Saxon court master Georg von Spät. She was also buried in the Wittenberg Castle Church and an epitaph was erected, which is now badly damaged. With her he fathered 5 sons and 5 daughters, three of whom each survived.
