Life

Johann Gottlieb Radlof was a linguist whose achievements were recognized by both Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm . He published articles on the German language in various magazines, including Wieland's 'Neuem teutschem Merkur'. On the advice of Christian Heinrich Wolke , he went to Braunschweig in 1804. From 1806 he lived in Leipzig and Heidelberg and finally spent a year in Erlangen as a private scholar. He came to Munich in 1809 and finally gained a firm foothold. In 1811 he became a diurnist at the library. His first major work, 'Excellence in the southern German (sic) mouth species for the embellishment and enrichment of the writing language', appeared in 1811 and made him known among experts. The Munich Academy, which was eager to research the German language, had noticed Radlof and announced a prize for German grammar, which Radlof was awarded and paid for. However, the annual salary that was suspended at the same time was not approved by Minister Montgelas . Radlof then decided to change location again and went to Frankfurt am Main in 1816 . The academy then appointed him a corresponding member of the philological-philosophical class. In the same year he published a collection on German dialects. In 1817 his work 'The languages of the Germanic peoples represented in all their dialects and explained by the parable speeches of the Säemanne and the prodigal son, including a short history of the name of the Teütschen'.

In 1818 Radlof received a professorship in Bonn, where he published essays and plays as well as a small volume dedicated to Wilhelm von Humboldt on German dialects in Italy and other linguistic studies of German dialects and dialects. Retired in 1822, he then went to Berlin, where he taught at the university from 1823 to 1826.
