Johann Habeler

Johann Habeler (born December 22, 1895 in Wiesen ; † August 6, 1967 there ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and building foreman. From 1945 to 1960 he was a member of the Burgenland Landtag .

Life

Habeler was born as the son of the day laborer Franz Habeler from Wiesen and attended the elementary school in Wiesen. He took up the profession of bricklayer and served between 1915 and 1918 in the First World War . With the "Christian Building and Stone Workers Association", Habeler founded the first Christian workers' association in Burgenland, and from 1928 to 1934 he was promoted to board member of the Christian trade unions in Burgenland. He was also local leader of the Freedom League in Wiesen and in 1934 the militia command in Wiesen. He also served as a local councilor in Wiesen between 1927 and 1932 and was chairman-deputy of the workers' administrative commission between 1937 and 1938. After the National Socialists came to power , Habeler was arrested three times for political reasons in 1938 and expelled from the country. He then worked as a construction worker at the Döllersheim military training area and in the Sudetenland and was drafted into military service in 1939. Later he was a site manager in road construction in the Waldviertel until 1945 .

After the end of the Second World War, Habeler took over the office of mayor of Wiesen between April 3, 1945 and January 21, 1957 . He was also regional chairman of the ÖAAB Burgenland from 1945 to 1956 and ÖVP district party chairman between 1945 and 1960. In addition, Habeler was active in the ÖGB and the Chamber of Labor, where in 1945 he was one of the co-founders of the ÖGB and from 1946 to 1948 he held the position of deputy chairman. He also served as Vice President of the Eisenstadt Chamber of Labor from 1948 to 1949 and was then a member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Labor from 1949 to 1953. Habeler represented the ÖVP between December 13, 1945 and May 5, 1960 in the Burgenland state parliament. Then he was chairman of the Austrian Pensioners' Association in Burgenland until 1965, where he had already taken over the office in 1959.
