from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann II. († July 25, 1499 ) was the second son of Count Sebastian I. von Ortenburg and Maria von Neuburg . He comes from the noble house of Ortenburg .

Live and act

Very little is known about Johann's life. His first appearance is in 1491 with his brothers. He is only ranked after his brother Ulrich II . However , he is ahead of his other brothers, Georg III, Siegmund, Sebastian, Christoph I , Sebastian II , Wilhelm and Eustach. Thus he would have been the second in the succession of the incumbent count.

Nevertheless, Johann II tried to achieve more. The Roman-German King and later Emperor Maximilian I offered him the County of Ortenburg in Carinthia, to which the Ortenburgers had inherited claims since the Count of Cilli died out in 1456 . He also gave him the promise to marry him to the rich daughter of the last Lord of Wallsee . In return, Maximilian Johanns asked for support in the fight against the Swiss in the Swabian War .

So Johann moved to Switzerland with Maximilian in 1499 . During an attack on the Swiss Confederates to relieve the besieged Dorneck Castle , south of Basel, Johann II fell.
