Johann Jakob Kirchhoff (born July 13, 1796 in Berlin , † December 30, 1848 in Leipzig ) was a German painter, illustrator and lithographer .

Life

Johann Jakob Kirchhoff was born as the son of Lieutenant a. D. Johann Jacob (* unknown; † 1807) from the Rheinpfalz and his wife Anna Sophia Krüger (* unknown; † 1803) born. Because his parents died very early, he was brought up by a guardian.

He attended the French Cathedral School of the French Reformed Congregation in Berlin and here his talent for painting and composition was already evident. After finishing school he was apprenticed to Professor Karl Röthig by his guardian in 1811, who at the time owned a paint factory and ran a drawing school. In 1815 Johann Jakob Kirchhoff received permission to copy the pictures of the older masters in the royal picture gallery in the Berlin Palace . Through his talent and appearance, he earned the recognition and friendship of the other artists working there.

After an examination, he was accepted into the teaching class of the Academy of Arts by the director Johann Gottfried Schadow . Following his academic studies, he devoted himself mainly to portrait painting in oil and miniature, also inspired by his future father-in-law Wilhelm Reuter (1768–1834), who was a court painter. He also worked with lithography and copperplate engraving , but also with woodcuts . In the course of time his painting style changed and he got closer to the Dutch school. He mainly carried out history painting for bookselling purposes.

In the spring of 1848 he was offered the management of the artistic section of the Illustrirten Zeitung in Leipzig. To do this, he moved to Leipzig, but fell ill with tracheal tuberculosis shortly after the move, from which he then died.

Johann Jakob Kirchhoff was married to Wilhelmine Reuter (1803–1869) and had three sons with her:

  • Adolf Kirchhoff (January 6, 1826 - February 27, 1908), philologist
  • Albrecht Kirchhoff (born January 30, 1827 - † August 20, 1902), bookseller
  • Otto Kirchhoff (1834–1910), bookseller
