Johann Jakob Stevens von Steinfels (Czech: Jan Jakub Stevens Steinfels , also: Steevens ; * before January 17, 1651 in Prague ; † before November 4, 1730 ibid) was a Bohemian Baroque painter .

Life

Johann Jakob came from the Dutch Stevens family of painters. His grandfather Pieter Stevens was appointed court painter to Emperor Rudolf II in Prague in 1594 . His father Anton Stevens was raised to the nobility in 1643 with the title of Steinfels .

Johann Jakob has been known as a fresco painter since 1688 . Before that he was probably in Italy, where he is said to have been inspired by works by Pietro da Cortona and Giovanni Lanfranco . Most of his works were created in the 1690s. His later works were no longer of such high quality. Towards the end of his life he stopped painting. From 1725 he lived as a wealthy councilor in his house in Prague.
