Johann Justus Scherbius

Johann Justus Scherbius (born September 17, 1762 in Frankfurt am Main ; † February 12, 1827 there ) was a lawyer and politician of the Free City of Frankfurt .

Johann Justus Scherbius was the son of the teacher Johann Jacob Gottlieb Scherbius and his first wife Anna Catharina Elisabetha Collenberg . His father had been a Latin teacher to Johann Wolfgang Goethe and his sister Cornelia from 1756 to 1760 and had acquired citizenship in Frankfurt in 1758 .

Scherbius studied law at the University of Jena from 1781 and was awarded a doctorate there in 1785. jur. PhD. In the meantime he had acquired legal practice at the Reich Chamber of Commerce in Wetzlar. From 1785 he was a lawyer in Frankfurt am Main. On September 23, 1794 he became city archivist. In the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt he was a councilor at the Frankfurt City Court. In 1817 and from 1819 to 1820 he was a judge of appeal and in 1818 city court director. From 1795 to 1816 he was a Senator and from 1816 to 1820 a Schöff member of the Senate of the Free City of Frankfurt . He was a member of the Legislative Body in 1820. Scherbius was a freemason . He is buried in the Peterskirchhof .
