family

His older brother Christian Gottlob von Voigt was a councilor and minister in Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach.

Life

Voigt came from the Ernestine office of Allstedt . After studying law at the University of Jena between 1773 and 1775, von Voigt continued his studies in mining sciences with Abraham Gottlob Werner from 1776 at the Bergakademie Freiberg . After graduation he entered the civil service of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach .

During this time, von Voigt carried out intensive mineralogical investigations throughout the Grand Duchy on behalf of Minister Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . In 1785 Goethe appointed him mining secretary in Weimar and later made him head of the mines in Ilmenau. In 1789 he was appointed a mountain ridge.

Von Voigt published several mineralogical works. In addition to descriptions of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach, von Voigt, who especially after studying the ancient volcanoes of the Rhön, represented the idea of Plutonism , attacked in his writings the doctrine of Neptunism coined by Abraham Gottlob Werner .

He coined the term " Lettenkohle ."

In 1790 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . The Ilmenauer Bergrat-Voigt-Straße is named after him.
