Móry came from a family of merchants from Neusohl. His musical talent showed up early on. He learned several string instruments and the piano . First he studied in Budapest at the commercial academy, he deepened his knowledge of music theory and composition in Hamburg and Berlin .
In 1921 Móry became the owner of the hotel on the New Chirmer Lake (Štrbské Pleso) in the High Tatras and expanded the hotel complex into a popular holiday resort and cultural center. Together with his wife, the concert pianist and opera singer Magda Szakmáry and music friends (including E. Suchon, B. Bartok, E. d'Albert, O. Novy, H. Büchel) he often organized his own music salons and concerts , which were broadcast via the station " Monte Mory "was broadcast live in the radio journal Kaschau (Košice). Móry was a native European. He wrote his songs and operettas mainly in German and Hungarian, later also in Slovak and Czech. Inspired by the mountain landscape, he created symphonic poems, works for dance and wind orchestras, piano and violin pieces as well as church music and over 200 songs based on texts by well-known poets such as Rilke, Dehmel, Goethe, Tagore, Reiner and Spis local poet.
The greatest successes, however, were achieved with his twelve Singspiele and operettas. Many of these stage works were performed in the Slovak National Theater in Preßburg (Bratislava), in Prague, Brno, Mährisch Ostrau, Opava and, with great success, in Hamburg and Berlin. The best-known arias from the operetta "La Valliere", which was performed in 1933 in the Berlin Schiller Theater with 85 reprises, came out as recordings by famous singers such as Joseph Schmidt and Louis Graveure. Because of the catchy, beautiful and rich melody and colorful instrumentation, Johann Móry was also called "Tatras Schubert". After the expropriation after 1945 he taught at the music school in Zipser Neudorf (Spišská Nová Ves), where a number of educational and instructive compositions were created.
The composer's estate is in the Museum of Literature and Music in Banská Bystrica and in the Karlsburg Museum in Karlsruhe-Durlach.
