Administration building of the shipping company Johann MK Blumenthal

The shipping company Johann MK Blumenthal is a German shipping company based in Hamburg-Altona .

history

The company was founded in June 1901 by Johann MK Blumenthal and Hans Böse as Blumenthal & Böse. It is one of the oldest shipping companies in Germany. The company developed into one of the largest trampoline shipping companies of its time.

The shipping company's ships were lost in World War II. After the war, von Blumenthal's grandson, Hans-Edwin Reith, rebuilt the company.

The Johann MK Blumenthal shipping company was rebuilt with the separation of the Reith brothers in mid-2005. The joint company “Orion” Schiffahrts-Gesellschaft Reith & Co. was split into “Orion” Bulkers and the shipping company Johann MK Blumenthal. The two companies have been working separately since then.

fleet

The company operates a fleet of around thirty bulk carriers of various sizes and one container ship (as of early 2013). In addition to freighters purchased second-hand, the fleet also consists of ships that the company has commissioned from shipyards in Germany, Japan, Korea and China.

Others

In April 2009, the shipping company's Patriot was hijacked by pirates off the East African coast . The ship was released again in May 2009.

In March 2019, the bulk carrier Anna-Elisabeth was temporarily detained in Port Kembla by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority after complaints from the crew about the working conditions on board.
