The MV Patriot is under the flag of Malta propelled cargo ship the Handysize size . The ship came to be known as the Patriot when it was hijacked by Somali pirates in April 2009.

history

The bulk carrier was built in 2002 under the hull number 784 at the Japanese shipyard Hakodate Dock Company in Tokyo . The keel was laid on October 22, 2001, the launch on January 17, 2002. The ship was as a patriot of the Hamburg shipping company Johann MK Blumenthal bereedert . The ship was owned by the Vantage Shipping Company in Valletta .

Later the ship was to the in Piraeus based company Asterias Navigation Company sold and MV Patriot renamed. It is now managed by Pilot Shipping in Thessaloniki .

kidnapping

Somali pirates kidnapped the Patriot on April 25, 2009 in the Gulf of Aden, about 280 km southeast of the Yemeni coastal town of Al-Mukalla , the capital of the Hadramaut region . The ship was destined for al-Huddaida with a cargo of wheat . In addition to the Polish captain, a Ukrainian engineer and 15 Filipino seamen were on board the freighter .

The Polish Foreign Ministry announced on May 19, 2009 that the freighter had been released on May 15, 2009. A spokesman for the Federal Foreign Office confirmed the release. The spokesman gave no information about possible ransom payments and the circumstances of the liberation. The ship continued on its way.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is controlled by a Mitsubishi - diesel engine driven (type 6UEC52LA). The six-cylinder , two-stroke diesel engine with an output of 6,620  kW was built under license by Akasaka Diesels. Two diesel generators with an output of 400 kW each and an emergency generator with an output of 64 kW are available for the power supply.

The ship has five holds with a total capacity of around 40,959 m³ for bulk goods and 39,680 m³ for bale goods. The tank ceiling can be loaded with a maximum of 23 t / m². The holds are closed with MacGregor hydraulic hatch covers. A ship crane with a lifting capacity of 30 t is located between holds 1, 2, 3 and 4.
