Johann Martin Bernigeroth (born November 7, 1713 in Leipzig ; † February 22, 1767 there ) was a German engraver .

Life

Johann Martin Bernigeroth was the son of the engraver Martin Bernigeroth and his second wife, Rosine Katharina, daughter of the Leipzig merchant Ettel.

He was trained in his father's workshop and later took it over together with his brother Johann Benedikt (1716–1764). Following French models, he refined his technique with regard to the decoration and the reproduction of fabrics. He created numerous portraits and book vignettes.

He turned down a call to Saint Petersburg and received the title of court copper engraver. During the Seven Years' War he anonymously dug 80 battle plans, which he closed in 1763 as the "New War Theater".

Bernigeroth was married to Rahel Charlotte Buchner, daughter of a Leipzig grocer, from 1735. His son Martin Friedrich (1737–1801) was also a copperplate engraver and later a drawing teacher in Switzerland.
