Johann Martin Dömming

Johann Martin Dömming (also: Doemming, born September 30, 1703 in Milz (Thuringia) , † around 1760) was a German composer of the late Baroque.

Life

Domming's apprenticeship and youth have so far been completely in the dark. According to the court protocol of November 24, 1731, Johann Martin Dömming, until then an administrative employee of the court administration ( kitchen clerk ) and amateur musician, was appointed director music of the Bentheim-Tecklenburg court orchestra under Count Moritz Casimir I (1710–1768) with immediate effect . In this position, Doemming had the task, for only 40 Reichsthaler annual salary, " ... to lead the music at the time and at the hour, when we graciously like it ". Seats of the county were Hohenlimburg Castle near Hagen and Rheda Castle . Moritz Kasimir, who had studied law and art in the Netherlands, was a great music lover who played the violin, flute and cello himself.

Concerts lasting around an hour were held every day in his residences, for which Dömming had to compose or procure the music. The inventory included, for example, numerous prints of Italian music from the Estienne Roger publishing house in Amsterdam. Everyone who could play an instrument or sing at court had to take part in the concerts.

Music of the court orchestra

A two-volume thematic catalog of the Count's music collection was begun in Domming's lifetime as early as 1750, the second part of which consisted of vocal works. In the course of time, the catalog was largely destroyed in various fires and other imponderables.

The Catalogus musicus was provided with supplements until around 1768 and thus represents the repertoire of the count's court orchestra during the reign of its founder Moritz Casimir I. Of the original 615 instrumental works as well as 200 cantatas and arias , only 245 instrumental and 52 vocal works have survived. The collection contains numerous works by Italian, French and other German composers, but above all works from the Berlin and Vienna pre-classical periods. There is plenty of concert music for wind instruments with string accompaniment and basso continuo in a total of up to seven voices, which the court orchestra could perform without further reinforcement, additional performers came from the ranks of local church musicians.

Works

Domming's works were founded in the 1960s by Dr. Erich Thurmann sighted and cataloged. The abbreviation "D-Rh Ms" is the "Prince of Bentheim-Tecklenburgische library" in Rheda that its stock since the 1960s, the University Library Münster as a permanent loan made available.

Of the 91 compositions by Domming recorded so far, only 32 have survived. The cantata Die Jagd Ms 147 bears the composer's last known date with the year 1755. After that, every trace of Dömming is lost. As noted on the title pages, Domming's works were created in the two residences of the royal family in Hohenlimburg and Rheda.

The following work was created with the express permission of the Rheda office and the support of the Münster library director Burkhard Rosenberger. The following are Domming's works, revised, handwritten, re-edited and documented by the Brussels music researcher Thomas Van Wetteren. All works are available to interested musicians in an approved version, in a version approved for non-commercial purposes, in the library of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels , the University and State Library of Münster - Department of Manuscripts and in the Hagen City Archives. They have been entered in the international music repertory RISM .
