Johann Matthäus Freiherr von Lehmann (* July 14, 1778 ; † March 2, 1853 ) was a politician and President of the State Council of the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

Johann Matthäus von Lehmann was the son of Franz Ludwig Gottfried Freiherr von Lehmann (1738–1808) and his wife Anna Sibylla, née von Groll (1748–1796). The father of the grand ducal Hessian real secret councilor and senior consistorial president in Darmstadt. Johann Matthäus von Lehmann, who was a Protestant denomination, married Caroline Wilhelmine, born Freiin von Malapart-Neuville (1790–1829) in 1809. From the marriage, the son Robert Franz Freiherr von Lehmann (1818–1878) emerged, who was later to become a member of the second chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse and chief forester.

Life

Johann Matthäus von Lehmann studied law at the State University of Gießen in Hessen and became a government assessor in 1799. From 1801 to 1802 he was Legation Councilor at the Reichstag in Regensburg . In 1819 he was appointed secret trainee and on March 25, 1820 he was appointed secret councilor. In addition to his work as a State Councilor in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was a member of the Oberpostinspektion from 1819 to 1829. In 1821 Grand Duke Ludwig appointed him a real secret councilor. In 1832 he became senior consistorial president . He was President of the Council of State from 1844 to 1848 and retired in 1848.

Honors

In 1834 he was promoted to Dr. jur. hc from the University of Giessen.
