Johann Melchior Beseke

Johann Melchior Gottlieb Beseke (born September 26, 1746 in Burg (near Magdeburg) , † October 8, 1802 in Mitau ) was a German lawyer, philosopher and ornithologist.

Beseke, the son of a pastor and educator, went to Klosterbergen Abbey and from 1766 attended the University of Frankfurt an der Oder , where he studied theology and then philosophy and law. In 1772 he received his master's degree in Halle and was awarded a Dr. jur. PhD. Then he gave philosophical and legal lectures in Halle. In 1774 he went to the Illustre grammar school ( Academia Petrina ) in Mitau , where he was professor of legal scholarship and was several times Vice-Rector.

He published philosophical treatises, on law, natural history, and even chemistry. In 1797 he published a treatise on the history of the doctrine of spontaneous generation . As an ornithologist, he built up a collection of birds in Courland .
