Johann Melchior Roos (born December 27, 1663 in Heidelberg , † 1731 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German painter .

Life

Johann Melchior Roos was the second son of the animal painter Johann Heinrich Roos and brother of the painter Philipp Peter Roos . He was first his father's pupil and then continued his education during a stay in Italy from 1686 to 1690. He then returned to Germany and lived in Frankfurt am Main, where he died in 1731.

Johann Melchior Roos is known for his lively, but not always anatomically correct depictions of the animal world. His pictures show deer, roe deer, bears, but also animals from more southern zones such as lions and tigers. Compared with the works of his father, the paintings of Johann Melchior Roos, with few exceptions, appear weaker in drawing and duller in tone, and perhaps the oldest surviving reports about him are correct in claiming that diligence and perseverance are not always on a par with his great talent. The Frankfurt Hüsgen and the older Dutch artist-biographer Jacob Campo Weyerman , from whom the latter met him personally in Frankfurt in 1709, can tell of the artist's capricious ideas and lavish inclinations .
