Johann Moritz David Herold

Johann Moritz David Herold (born January 3, 1790 in Jena ; † December 30, 1862 in Marburg ) was a doctor, anatomist, professor of medicine, zoology and natural history.

He was the son of Hieronymus Mattäus Christian Herold and Johanne Eleonore Friederike Hoppe. Herold began studying medicine in Jena in 1805 and moved to the University of Helmstedt in 1807 . There he met his future colleague Bünger, then a prosector in Helmstedt, who recommended him to Halle as a prosector. In 1809, at the age of 19, he took up a position in Halle with a salary of 300 talers . In 1811 he went to Marburg to continue his studies there. He received his doctorate there in 1812, became a full professor of medicine in 1822, and in 1824 also professor of zoology and director of the zoological collection. In 1857 he received the title of Secret Medical Councilor. In 1862 he retired.

He was mainly concerned with the ontogenesis of invertebrates. In 1823 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
