Johann Mrazek (born November 17, 1939 in Neustadt / Erzgebirge ) is a German geologist and author.

Life

After attending the Winckelmann secondary school in Seehausen / Altmark , he obtained his Abitur there in 1958. After a year of practical experience as a measurement assistant with a prospecting team from VEB Geophysik Leipzig, he studied geology at the Humboldt University in Berlin , which he graduated with a diploma in 1964. As part of an A-traineeship at the Institute of Geology and the Geography Section of the same institution, he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD (A dissertation: Morphometric investigations on the granite gravel in situ and in the sediment of the Bode / Harz). Unlimited assistant years followed until 1973.

This was followed by activities as an employee, work group leader, department head in the State Central Geological Institute in Berlin, main department Marine Geology in Reinkenhagen , district until 1980 . Rostock. From here the participation in several geomarine research expeditions in the Baltic Sea as well as in the deep sea of the Atlantic Ocean took place. The topic of the B doctorate (habilitation) arose from this sea work : Sediment distribution and distribution of manganese nodules - investigation of their dependence on the carbonate lines in selected deep-sea areas of the southern North Atlantic . It was worked on within the framework of a new aspirant at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald and defended in 1984 (Dr. sc. Nat.).

In 1985 he was appointed to the only lectureship for marine geology in the GDR and in 1992, after the fall of the Wall , as a university professor for general geology and quaternary geology at the University of Greifswald until 2005.

Understanding the unity of research and teaching, he represented the subjects of general, marine and quaternary geology for major and minor students in courses. In his research, he has spent about 30 years investigating marine geological problems in the deep seas of the Atlantic and Pacific, in particular through projects and expeditions with the RV “A. v. Humboldt ”before and RV“ Sonne ”after 1990. The focus was on sediments and manganese nodules . At the same time, he worked as a faculty and senate member of the university.

In 2005 he retired, after which he worked in teaching and research in Greifswald until 2012.

He is the author and co-author of around 100 titles. The conclusion is his 370-page autobiography Between Deep Sea and High Mountains (Lebenssplitter) , which was published in 2014 by Verlag am Park (Edition Ost) ( ISBN 978-3-945187-07-4 ).
