Life

Johann Nepomuk Hauntinger was the son of Andreas Xaver Hauntinger, printer in the monastery print shop, and Theresia Lüthi. His brother was Father Blasius, born in 1762 (later in the Rheinau monastery ). Johann Nepomuk entered the monastery of St. Gallen at the age of 16 and made his profession on May 30, 1773 . In 1779 he was ordained a priest. In 1780 he was appointed abbey librarian . He held this office until his death in 1823. Under his leadership, the monastery was able to acquire numerous books. He and his friend Father Ildefons von Arx discovered fragments of old manuscripts in the book covers. Hauntinger was an employee of the MGH and a member of the Society for Older German History. After fleeing several times from 1798 and relocating the library, the newly formed government of the canton of St. Gallen summoned him in 1803 to put the books in the monastery library again.
