Johann Nicolaus Apel , also Johannes Nikolaus Apel (* 1757 ; † May 9, 1823 in Neustadt am Kulm ) was a German author, doctor of philosophy, natural scientist, designer and politician.

Life

Johann Nicolaus Apel was born in 1757 as the son of Johann Apel (1726–79). His uncle was the government advocate Johann Thomas Mösel, who died on July 1, 1822 in Neustadt. The manuscripts of the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg show that he was in Erlangen from 1778 to 1781 .

Apel spent most of his life in Neustadt am Kulm . He is the designer and builder of the first observation tower on the Rauhen Kulm . He also initiated a shooting range on the Sandberg and laid out numerous paths on the Rauhen Kulm. In addition, he dealt extensively with the geology and history of the city and the surrounding area and in 1811 wrote the book Der rauhe Kulm and its surroundings along with a history and topography of Neustadt an den Kulmen in the Main district . At the beginning of this book he reports that chance thwarted his life plan and led him to Neustadt am Kulm. He does not give an exact date. His services in researching the nature and geology of the Rauhen Kulm as well as the construction of various gardens and buildings as well as the creation of comfortable paths were recognized by the editorial staff of the Bayreuther Zeitung after his death.

Apel was a doctor of philosophy and a contemporary of Jean Paul . With this he had letter contact on July 9, 1818. Jean Paul asked him for information from the school and church files of his grandfather Johann Richter, who was rector in Neustadt . Jean Paul was baptized by the father of Johann Nicolaus Apel.

The diary of Caroline von Lindenfels shows that he was also mayor of Neustadt am Kulm. He was in close contact with her.
