from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Nicolaus Mempel (* December 10, 1713 in Heyda near Ilmenau; † February 26, 1747 in Apolda ), also Mempell or Mämpel , was cantor in Apolda from 1740 until his death .

meaning

The significance of Mempel for music research lies in the fact that he co-authored one of the most important manuscripts for organ and keyboard works by Johann Sebastian Bach : the so-called Mempell-Preller manuscript , which was named after Mempel and Johann Gottlieb Preller . So far it is not known where Mempel came into contact with Bach's music. Possibly he was acquainted with Johann Gottfried Walther or with Johann Peter Kellner .
