Johann Obersteiner

Johann Obersteiner (born October 8, 1824 in Zell am Ziller , † March 24, 1896 in Kufstein ) was an Austrian composer, choir director and organist.

Live and act

Obersteiner was born the son of a forester. From 1836 to 1838 he attended the school of the Musikverein in Innsbruck . In addition, he learned various instruments as an autodidact. From 1840 he worked as an organist at the collegiate church of St. Peter in Salzburg and became a student of Alois Taux . In 1848 he became organist at the parish church of Kufstein , where he was also active as choir regent, choirmaster of the Liedertafel and director of the town band.

Johann Obersteiner composed more than 50 masses, whereby he is regarded as a representative of Cecilianism .
