Johann Othmar Doebeli (born November 1, 1874 in Menziken , † January 29, 1922 in Zofingen ) was a Swiss painter .

Life

Forest section, 1908

After his parents moved from Meisterschwanden to Zofingen, Othmar Doebeli attended the schools in the city of Zofingen, where he was noticed early on due to his talent for drawing. Doebeli then studied at the "painting school" of the Technikum Winterthur , where he obtained a diploma in decorative painting. Further studies later led him to the academies of Paris and Munich (1898–1900).

However , Doebeli did not seem to interfere in the heated debate between Expressionists and Impressionists at the time ; he remained true to realism , as it was mainly taught in Munich. Some of his pictures had changed hands for a hot meal or a five-piece , so Doebeli remained bitterly poor all his life. On January 29, 1922, he died - lonely, impoverished and in debt - at the age of only 48 from the long-term effects of a flu that was not cured.

Services

Othmar Doebeli appears today as a classic example of a small-town artist from the previous turn of the century. Doebeli is a painter marked by realism, whose landscapes and portraits are tranquil and nostalgic at the same time. In addition, Doebeli is considered to be the “ethnographer” of his former home. His favorite motifs were forest and tree games with their play of light and shadow. His summer pictures often show chickens; his winter pictures often ravens in the snow and rather dark-toned components in the style of Munich realism. Doebeli finally found access to the free Swiss artists' association Sezession and exhibited at the Zurich Kunsthaus and several Zofingen art galleries.
